What is the difference between Royal TS, Royal TSX and Royal TS/X?

Our client applications are available on multiple platforms: Desktop (Windows, Mac OS) and Mobile (iOS and Android).

Licensing for the desktop applications:

  • If you are on a Windows operating system, you can buy licenses for Royal TS for Windows.
  • If you are on a Mac, running Mac OS, you can buy licenses for Royal TSX for Mac OS.
  • If you are on both, Windows and Mac OS, you can buy a "Royal TS/X Bundle" license which includes the Windows and the Mac OS license.

To obtain one of our desktop licenses, head to our buy page here: https://royalapps.com/ts/buy

In this document we will refer to our desktop client applications (Royal TS for Windows and Royal TSX for macOS) by using the term Royal TS/X.

What about the Mobile applications?

Our mobile applications (Royal TSi for iOS and Royal TSD for Android) are "companion" apps which allow you to open documents created with our desktop applications.

What is Royal Server?

Royal Server is a separate product that consists of 3 main components:

  • Management Endpoint (for certain connection types)
  • Secure Gateway (SSH tunneling)
  • Document Store

Deploying Royal Server is not mandatory to use our client applications although it can help you to streamline your configuration, provide functionality on non-Windows platforms and make accessing your servers more secure via the included Secure Gateway. See also: https://royalapps.com/server/main/features

Does a Royal Server license include Royal TS/X?

No, Royal TS/X and Royal Server are separate products which are licensed separately.

Royal TS/X licenses cover our client applications which allow you to connect to various servers, services and manage credentials, tasks, etc. See also: https://royalapps.com/ts

Royal Server licenses cover our server application (including all 3 components: Management Endpoint, Secure Gateway and Document Store). Royal Server licenses are sold separately in addition to our client application licenses here: https://royalapps.com/server/main/buy

Can I use Royal TS/X and Royal Server for Free (in Shareware Mode)?

Royal TS/X can be downloaded, installed and used for free without registration, without a license key, without time limit (no trial expiration) and without any nag screens. In this mode (Shareware Mode), the following restrictions are applied:

  • You cannot have more than 10 connections per Royal TS/X application instance.
  • You cannot have more than 10 credentials per Royal TS/X application instance.
  • You can open only one document per Royal TS/X application instance.
  • Royal TSX (for macOS) only: You cannot use the AppleScript interface.
  • Royal Server (beginning with V4) no longer ships including a shareware license, but we will gladly issue a trial license. Please get your trial license under royalapps.com/trial in order to test Royal Server without any functional limitation.

No other restrictions apply - all features of Royal TS/X are available in Shareware Mode! This allows small shops or individuals with a small environment to use Royal TS/X free of charge, without obtaining a license key.

How long is my license valid?

Royal TS/X and Royal Server are licensed via a perpetual license for the version purchased; please note that there are no annual or recurring fees. For example: If you purchase a license for Royal TS V6, all minor versions (Royal TS V6.1, V6.2, etc.) are covered by the license. When a new major version is released, a new license key will be required. Each license includes "software maintenance" (see below) and users with active software maintenance will receive free upgrade license keys for the next major version. The same applies to Royal Server and Royal TSX (for macOS).

How can I view my licenses and check their status?

You can view the status of your licenses in our customer portal at my.royalapps.com. To access the portal, please register an account with the email address that was used during the order process. The customer portal also allows you to extend your software maintenance and request free upgrades for eligible licenses. You can also view your older licenses by opening the "Filter" menu and selecting "Show All".

What is "Software Maintenance"?

All of our licenses include 1 year of software maintenance, except for our extended global licenses, which include 3 years of software maintenance. Our software maintenance plan gives you access to the latest versions of our products (including major version releases). This means you are entitled to upgrade your Royal TS/X or Royal Server license to the latest version free of charge for 1 year after the purchase (or in case of extended global licenses, 3 years). Please note that priority email support is also included in the software maintenance plan.

What happens when my software maintenance plan expires?

Since all of our licenses are perpetual, you can still use the version of Royal TS/X and Royal Server you obtained the license for after the software maintenance has expired (see above: "How long is my license valid?"). You will also have access to all minor product updates for the version you purchased or the last version you received during the software maintenance period.

How can I extend my software maintenance plan?

Expired software maintenance can be extended by purchasing new licenses at a reduced price. Customers with expired software maintenance will automatically receive an email containing a software maintenance extension link. After you click on the link, the discount will be automatically applied on the shopping cart page (after clicking the “Buy Now” button). If you haven’t received the maintenance extension emails, you can either check your license status in our customer portal my.royalapps.com or contact us with your original order or license information. Please note that the maintenance extension is a limited time offer. The provided discount is only valid for two months after the software maintenance has expired.

What happens if I want to upgrade to the latest major version, but the software maintenance has expired?

If you wish to upgrade to the latest version, but your maintenance has expired, you will need to purchase a new license for the full purchase price.

What are the benefits of extending my software maintenance plan?

The main benefits of having active software maintenance are the access to the latest major releases and priority email support. Not only that, but the software maintenance extension is the best time to change your licensing model. If you want to upgrade from Royal TS (for Windows) or Royal TSX (for macOS) to the Royal TS/X Bundle, the maintenance extension is the best time to do this since you can upgrade with a discount. Or perhaps you have multiple individual user licenses that you would like to co-term into one single license; this can also be done during the software maintenance extension. Last but not least, if your existing license no longer covers your licensing needs, you can also upgrade to a Site or Global license with a discount during the software maintenance extension.

Royal Server Personal License

Additionally, it only allows one installation of Royal Server. If you want to manage your personal IT infrastructure or test lab at home, this is the perfect license for you. The Document Store component can only host one document, while our commercial licenses can have an unlimited amount of documents. Similar to the Royal TS/X + Royal Server Personal License, this license is only available for non-commercial use.

What are the differences between Personal and Commercial licenses?

Commercial License Type

"Individual User License", "Site License", "Global License" and "Extended Global License" are considered to be commercial licenses. These are the standard licensing options for organizations and business entities (including educational and non-profit organizations). Licenses are purchased by the company and can be used by its employees/members.
We ask that non-profit and educational organizations contact us regarding a discount.

Personal License Type

"Personal Licenses (non-commercial)" are a discounted option for private individuals who purchases a license with their own funds, and therefore solely for their own personal use. Examples would be for learning purposes or managing a test-lab at home.

What is the difference between Site and Global Licenses?

A site license grants you the right to install and use the software for all your employees (unlimited users) for a single site (single office). A global license grants you the right to install and use the software for all your employees (unlimited users) for multiple sites (multiple offices/branch offices).
